Housemarque – Saros

Casting no shadows

Saros is the second roguelike third person sci-fi shooter from Housemarque, following on the success of Returnal. The game releases on April 30th for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.

Sysnopsis

You were sent on a strange planet to investigate the disappearance of a colony sent prior. You wake up with no much recollection and most of your team is missing. Where are the colonists, what happened to them, what about the rest of your team? So many questions unanswered, all you can do is go out there and find the answers. Should you die, you will have to return and try again, hoping to get further with what you learned.

Similar yet different

Yes the game as some elements that resembles Returnal, but they are only similarities. As much as Returnal was dark and gloomy, Saros is bright and full of details. Like  the previous game, this one also has the map regenerate differently with some key locations. For the skill/talent tree, the progression is purchased by orbs collected during your run. But be careful not to hold on to them, because at the end of each runs, the amount kept and what was gathered is added up, with a bonus  and of course a large penalty. Therefore the calculated amount at the end of the run could be less than what you started with. Progression in the skill tree is also lock and you can only progress once you defeated a specific boss.

Finale note

Saros offers many things to discover as you progress in the story. If you do not like repetitive games, this one is not for you, if you enjoyed Returnal, you should also like this one. I played the game on the regular PS5 with no issue, my copy of the game was provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment. This is a 5 Alarm Fire and Housemarque really got the sequel right as we the players wanted it.
